Jamaica
Come to Jamaica and Feel All Right! Ocho Rios is particularly known for its spectacular waterfalls, sprawling beaches, tropical gardens and fern gullies. For a memorable adventure, climb the 700-foot cascading waterfalls of Dunns River Falls. The "Capital of Casual", Negril is at the western tip of the island and is known for its amazing sunsets and gorgeous Seven Mile Beach. Runaway Bay (so called because slaves once used this area as an escape route) is a short distance west of Ocho Rios and home to several resorts. Visit the Seville Great House and Nine Miles, birthplace of Bob Marley. On the north coast between Montego Bay and Runaway Bay, Falmouth and Braco are growing resort areas offering a variety of popular hotels and all-inclusive resorts.
It is easy to wax lyrical about the island of Jamaica in the north of the Caribbean. The glorious glow of its sunsets, the unique and engaging ways of its people, the alluring white sandy beaches and lush green mountains, the sparkling waterfalls. All can inspire the poet in anyone. The beauty of this island paradise has drawn visitors for centuries: first it was the wealthy few who were privileged to enjoy the unspoilt tropical delights of Jamaica. The name Jamaica originates from the pre-colonial native inhabitants, the Arawak Indians, to whom 'Xaymaca' meant 'land of wood and water'. There is little left of the Indian culture: after being discovered by Columbus in 1494 Jamaica was ruled by the Spanish for 150 years, and then by the British for the next 300 years. Independence came in 1962 to the Jamaican people who are now a warm blend of different cultures and nationalities, though significantly African based because of the influence of the imported slaves, who endeavored to keep their tribal traditions alive while being forced to labor on the island plantations.
Jamaica has the purest water sanitation process in the Caribbean. This means no “traveler flu” for it’s guests. Jamaican people are the friendliest in the world. From the staff at the hotels to the people on the street, everyone is smiling and helpful. Jamaicans speak English, making it much easier for inexperienced travelers from the USA to feel at home. There are many options for exploration in Jamaica. From beautiful waterfalls to tropical jungle raft rides, many fun adventures await. My husband and I have lead group trips to Jamaica over 10 times and each trip was wonderful. We’ve stayed in most of the major resort destinations and done everything from riding ATV’s up a mountainside to cruising on a “Rum Punch” catamaran. Many shopping opportunities abound. There is everything from the local craft markets where you can bargain with the local owners to modern malls with all prices clearly marked. I’ve brought home everything from an exquisite gold bracelet to a hand-carved giant shark. Jamaica is only a 3 hour airplane ride from the Midwest. The charters from St Louis also have the benefit of being non-stop. Freezing when you get on the plane and a pleasant 80 degrees when you get off! Most of the all-inclusive resorts feature everything you need so you never have to leave the resort if you don’t want to. They have native artisans that display their wares at the hotel and local musicians and other entertainers that perform each night. In Jamaica, “Irie” means that everything is going well and life is good. Many Jamaicans say “Irie” instead of goodby as their way of wishing the other person a happy and stress free life.
